About Friends Arena

History

Friends Arena, located in Solna, Stockholm, was officially opened on October 27, 2012. The stadium was built to replace Sweden's former national stadium, Råsunda Stadium, and serves as the home ground for the Sweden national football team and AIK Fotboll. The construction began in 2009, with the project cost estimated at around 2.8 billion SEK. It was designed by the architectural firm Populous, known for their work on major sports venues worldwide.

Features

Friends Arena has a retractable roof, making it one of the few stadiums in Scandinavia with this feature. The seating capacity is approximately 50,000 for football matches, expandable to 65,000 for concerts. The pitch is a hybrid grass system, combining natural grass with synthetic fibers for durability. The stadium includes modern facilities such as VIP lounges, restaurants, and conference spaces. Its distinctive oval shape and LED-lit exterior make it a recognizable landmark in Stockholm.

Atmosphere

The stadium is known for its vibrant atmosphere, particularly during AIK Fotboll matches, where passionate fans create a lively environment. The "Black Army," AIK's supporter group, is renowned for their tifos and chants. For national team games, the stadium fills with Swedish fans waving flags and singing traditional football anthems. The acoustics are designed to amplify crowd noise, enhancing the matchday experience.

Notable Events

Friends Arena has hosted several high-profile events, including the 2013 UEFA Europa League Final between Chelsea and Benfica. It was also a venue for the 2015 UEFA Women's Champions League Final. The stadium regularly stages concerts by international artists, such as Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay, and Beyoncé. Additionally, it was used for the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and the 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
