NK Olimpija Ljubljana
SloveniaEst. 2005Stožice StadiumNK Olimpija Ljubljana is a professional football club based in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. The club was originally founded in 1945 as NK Olimpija and became one of the most successful clubs in Yugoslav football before Slovenia's independence. The original Olimpija won the Yugoslav First League twice, in 1946 and 1992, and claimed four Yugoslav Cup titles in 1946, 1957, 1993, and 1994. However, the original club ceased operations in 2005 due to severe financial difficulties. Following the dissolution of the original NK Olimpija, a new club called NK Olimpija Ljubljana was established in 2005 through a merger of several lower-division clubs, inheriting the name, colors, and traditions of the original team. The new Olimpija started in the fourth tier of Slovenian football and worked its way up through the divisions. The club achieved promotion to the Slovenian PrvaLiga, the top division of Slovenian football, and has since established itself as one of the leading teams in the country. NK Olimpija Ljubljana has won the Slovenian PrvaLiga title multiple times since their reformation, with championships in 2016, 2018, and 2023. They have also claimed several Slovenian Cup victories, continuing the winning tradition established by their predecessor. The club plays its home matches at Stožice Stadium, a modern venue that opened in 2010 and serves as Slovenia's national stadium. The stadium replaced the old Bežigrad Stadium, which was the traditional home of the original Olimpija. Throughout its history, both as the original club and in its current form, Olimpija has been known for developing talented players who have gone on to represent Slovenia at international level. The club has also participated in various European competitions, including the UEFA Champions League qualifiers and the UEFA Europa League. The team's colors are green and white, reflecting Ljubljana's traditional sporting colors. These colors have remained consistent throughout the club's various incarnations and are deeply associated with the city's sporting identity. NK Olimpija Ljubljana maintains a strong rivalry with NK Maribor, Slovenia's other major football club, and matches between these teams are among the most anticipated fixtures in Slovenian football. The club has built a loyal fanbase known as the 'Green Dragons,' who are known for their passionate support and colorful displays at matches. Under various managers and ownership structures, the club has worked to rebuild its reputation and competitive position in Slovenian and European football. The modern Olimpija has invested in youth development and infrastructure, aiming to create a sustainable model for long-term success. Despite being a relatively young club in its current form, NK Olimpija Ljubljana has quickly re-established itself as a force in Slovenian football, honoring the legacy of the original Olimpija while building its own identity and achievements in the 21st century.
