EnglandEst. 1878Manager: Sean DycheGoodison ParkEverton Football Club is one of England's most historic and successful football clubs, founded in 1878 and based in Liverpool, Merseyside. The club was established following a dispute at St. Domingo FC, which led to the formation of Everton FC, named after the local area where they played. Everton became one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888 and has remained in the top flight of English football longer than any other club except Arsenal. The Toffees, as they are affectionately known, enjoyed their golden era during the 1960s and 1980s. Under manager Harry Catterick in the 1960s, Everton won two First Division titles (1962-63, 1969-70) and the FA Cup in 1966. However, it was during the 1980s under Howard Kendall that the club reached its modern peak, winning two First Division titles (1984-85, 1986-87), the FA Cup in 1984, and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1985, defeating Rapid Vienna 3-1 in the final. Everton's rivalry with Liverpool FC, known as the Merseyside Derby, is one of the most intense in English football. The two clubs are separated by less than a mile and the rivalry dates back to 1892 when Liverpool FC was formed following Everton's departure from Anfield. Despite the fierce competition on the pitch, the rivalry is generally considered more friendly than many others, often referred to as the 'friendly derby' due to the many families in Liverpool who support both clubs. The club's home ground, Goodison Park, has been their fortress since 1892 and holds the distinction of being the first purpose-built football stadium in England. It was also the first football stadium to have double-decker stands on all four sides. Goodison Park hosted the 1966 World Cup semi-final between West Germany and the Soviet Union and has been a Category 4 stadium under UEFA regulations. Everton has produced and attracted numerous legendary players throughout its history. The club's all-time leading goalscorer is Dixie Dean, who scored an incredible 60 league goals in the 1927-28 season, a record that still stands today. Other notable players include Neville Southall, regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history, Alan Ball, Colin Harvey, and more recently, players like Tim Cahill and Leighton Baines who became modern club legends. The club has won nine top-flight league titles, though the last came in 1986-87. They have also claimed five FA Cups, with their most recent victory coming in 1995 when they defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley. In European competition, besides their Cup Winners' Cup triumph, Everton reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1985 but were banned from European competition for five years following the Heysel Stadium disaster, despite not being involved in the incident. Financially, Everton has faced challenges in recent decades, struggling to compete with the spending power of the Premier League's elite clubs. The club was purchased by British-Iranian businessman Farhad Moshiri in 2016, who initially invested heavily in the squad, bringing in players like Gylfi Sigurdsson, Richarlison, and James Rodriguez. However, despite significant investment, the club has struggled to achieve consistent success on the pitch. Everton's academy has produced numerous talented players who have gone on to represent both club and country. The Finch Farm training facility, opened in 2007, serves as the headquarters for all the club's teams from youth level to the first team. Notable academy graduates include Wayne Rooney, who began his career at Everton before moving to Manchester United, and Ross Barkley. The club is currently planning a move to a new 52,888-capacity stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock on Liverpool's waterfront, which is expected to be completed by 2025. This represents the biggest development in the club's recent history and is seen as crucial for competing financially with other Premier League clubs. The new stadium will provide enhanced facilities and increased revenue opportunities while maintaining the intimate atmosphere that Goodison Park is famous for. Everton's motto, 'Nil Satis Nisi Optimum' (Nothing but the best is good enough), reflects the high standards and ambitions that have driven the club throughout its history. The club's crest features the Prince Rupert's Tower, also known as Everton Lock-Up, a local landmark that gives the area its name. Throughout their history, Everton has maintained a strong connection with their local community and continues to play an important role in Liverpool's cultural and sporting identity, representing tradition, loyalty, and the enduring spirit of Merseyside football.
