FC Barcelona has officially announced the signing of 18-year-old Egyptian striker Hamza Abdelkarim. The club confirmed on Tuesday that it has exercised its purchase option for Abdelkarim, which was reported to be €1.5 million plus add-ons, and he has signed a three-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2029.

Challenges and Early Performances

Hamza Abdelkarim faced some initial challenges upon his arrival in Barcelona, particularly with a visa issue that delayed his debut. To expedite the process, he returned to Egypt and eventually made his first appearance in early March. Although there were indications that he would start with Barça Atlètic, he began his journey with the U19 A team. In a short span, he showcased his abilities as a traditional No. 9, scoring six goals in 11 appearances for the Blaugrana.

International Recognition

His impressive performances at the club level earned him a call-up from Egypt's head coach Hossam Hassan for the World Cup. Hamza received guidance from Mohamed Salah prior to the tournament. As the only dedicated center forward in Egypt's squad, he participated in the team’s first two World Cup matches against Belgium and New Zealand, contributing approximately 20 minutes of play in each match. He played a crucial role in helping Egypt achieve its first-ever World Cup victory against New Zealand, positioning the Pharaohs favorably for advancement to the knockout stage.

At Barcelona, coaches and executives have noted Hamza's unique skill set and his willingness to learn. The club aims to develop him into a more complete striker, moving beyond the typical profiles produced in their academy. Depending on Egypt's progress in the World Cup, he may be considered for inclusion in the first team's preseason plans, as hinted by coach Hansi Flick in a recent press conference.
