Central Coast Mariners A-League news: Queens Park Rangers takeover

The Central Coast Mariners are in the spotlight as Queens Park Rangers finalize their takeover, promising to reshape the team's future in the A-League.

The Central Coast Mariners have secured their future following a takeover by the owners of English Championship club Queens Park Rangers. The acquisition, confirmed on Tuesday, brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding the A-League club.

New Ownership and Future Plans

The majority shareholders of QPR, Total Soccer Growth Holdings (TSG), which also holds a stake in MLS club Los Angeles FC, will now back the Mariners. Ruben Gnanalingam, a Malaysian businessman, leads TSG and expressed enthusiasm for the potential of Australian football. “We see Australian football as a major growth area in the sport internationally,” Gnanalingam stated. He emphasized the importance of nurturing local talent and restoring enthusiasm for the club.

Challenges Ahead

While the acquisition focuses on the Mariners' A-League Men side, the future of the women’s team remains uncertain. The club has been financially supported by the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) since January, following the removal of former owner Mike Charlesworth's license. TSG is also exploring the possibility of selling a minority stake in the Mariners to the Holman Barnes Group, who own the NRL's Wests Tigers.

As part of the takeover, Gnanalingam will also oversee the club’s academy. One of his immediate challenges will be appointing a new manager for the senior men's team, as current coach Warren Moon has indicated he will not continue for the 2026/27 season. Meanwhile, the APL aims to find a buyer for the ALW side within the next six weeks.
