Arsenal complete first summer signing of Piero Hincapie despite Real Madrid attempts to hijack €40m transfer | FootballTransfers
Arsenal has completed the signing of defender Piero Hincapie for €40 million, successfully overcoming Real Madrid's efforts to disrupt the transfer. This marks the Gunners' first signing of the summer.
Arsenal has officially announced the signing of Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen, marking their first acquisition of the summer transfer window. The club confirmed that they have exercised the option to make his loan deal permanent for a fee of €40 million.
Hincapie's Journey at Arsenal
The Ecuadorian defender joined Arsenal on loan on transfer deadline day last summer, and his impact on the team was significant. Hincapie played a vital role in Mikel Arteta's squad as they secured the Premier League title and finished as runners-up in the Champions League, participating in 39 matches across all competitions.
Upon his arrival, Hincapie was initially a squad player, making his first Premier League start in November against Tottenham. However, he quickly established himself as the first-choice left-back, taking over from Riccardo Calafiori. His importance to the team was further highlighted when he was selected to start in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain last month. Following this, he joined the Ecuador national team for the 2026 World Cup, where he has already played in both of their matches.
Real Madrid Interest and Future at Arsenal
Despite securing his future at Arsenal, Hincapie's name was linked with Real Madrid this summer, as manager Jose Mourinho expressed interest in acquiring a versatile left-sided centre-back. Barcelona also explored the possibility of signing him. However, Arsenal showed no intention of letting Hincapie or Calafiori leave, leading Madrid to pursue other options, including Marc Cucurella for left-back and Alessandro Bastoni for center-back.
With Hincapie now a permanent member of the squad, he is expected to start the upcoming season at left-back, although he will face competition from Calafiori and promising youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly. The club has not ruled out the possibility of further defensive reinforcements as they prepare for the new campaign.
