World Cup 2026: Jurgen Klopp agrees deal in principle to become Germany coach - BBC Sport

Jurgen Klopp has agreed in principle to take over as the head coach of the German national football team for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, signaling a new era for the squad.

Jurgen Klopp has reportedly reached an agreement in principle to take over as the head coach of Germany's men's national football team. This development follows a meeting between Klopp and senior officials from the German Football Association (DFB) in New York on Friday.

Negotiations Underway

The DFB confirmed that further discussions are scheduled for next week, although an agreement with Klopp's current employer, Red Bull, is still pending. The DFB stated, "During the constructive exchange, an agreement was reached on the key points of a potential contract." Both parties are optimistic that negotiations can be successfully concluded soon.

Klopp's Coaching Background

This potential appointment marks Klopp's return to coaching after his nine-year stint at Liverpool, which ended in the summer of 2024. He is expected to sign a four-year contract, making this his first role in international football. Klopp has an impressive coaching resume, having led Liverpool to seven major trophies, including the Premier League title in the 2019-20 season and the Champions League in 2019. Prior to his time at Liverpool, he managed Borussia Dortmund, where he won two Bundesliga titles, and he also spent seven years at Mainz 05.

Germany's recent performances have raised concerns, as the team was eliminated in the last-32 stage of the World Cup, losing to Paraguay on penalties. This follows disappointing results in previous tournaments, including group stage exits in 2018 and 2022. Klopp's relationship with DFB vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke, who previously worked closely with him at Dortmund, is believed to have facilitated the swift negotiations as Germany seeks to revitalize its national team.
