World Cup 2026: DR Congo seeks ticket refunds after Ebola outbreak - BBC Sport
The Democratic Republic of Congo is seeking refunds for World Cup 2026 tickets due to an Ebola outbreak, highlighting safety concerns for fans and travelers.

Fans from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) are facing challenges in attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to travel restrictions linked to an Ebola outbreak. The country's football federation has formally requested FIFA to consider refunding ticket costs for supporters who are unable to enter the United States as a result of these restrictions.
Ebola Outbreak and Travel Restrictions
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency on May 16, 2026, amid a rising number of suspected Ebola cases in central and East Africa. Reports indicate over 900 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths, with the majority occurring in DR Congo. In response, the U.S. embassy in Kinshasa has suspended visa services, and non-American travelers who have been in DR Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within the last 21 days are barred from entering the U.S.
Fecofa's Appeal to FIFA
Veron Mosengo-Omba, president of DR Congo's football federation (Fecofa), expressed concern for fans who are passionate about supporting their team. He stated, "They are punished because they cannot get [in to the US] to see the World Cup to support their team," highlighting the financial burden of ticket prices. FIFA's typical policy allows for ticket resale or transfer but only offers refunds in exceptional cases such as match cancellations. In response to Fecofa's request, FIFA has indicated that it will review the situation.
Impact on Travel Plans
As the Leopards prepare to face Portugal in their Group K opener on June 17 in Houston, fans are now forced to reconsider their travel plans. Many are expected to redirect their journeys to Mexico for DR Congo's second group match against Colombia in Guadalajara. The team’s final match against Uzbekistan will take place in Atlanta, and supporters are hopeful that the Leopards can secure a spot in the knockout stage, which would allow them to compete in Toronto, Canada.
Despite the travel restrictions affecting fans, the team itself remains unaffected and is set to compete in the tournament. The situation continues to evolve as DR Congo navigates the challenges posed by the ongoing Ebola outbreak.
