Wollongong Wolves shift NPL game for Socceroos World Cup opener | Illawarra Mercury | Wollongong, NSW

The Wollongong Wolves have shifted their NPL match to allow fans to watch the Socceroos' World Cup opener, highlighting the importance of national representation.

The Wollongong Wolves have opted to reschedule their upcoming NSW NPL match against APIA Leichhardt, moving it from Sunday afternoon to Saturday night. This decision was made in light of the Socceroos' World Cup opener against Turkey, which is set to take place on Sunday at 2 PM AEST in Vancouver.

Wolves Prioritize Fan Experience

Head coach Luke Wilkshire emphasized that the change was a "no-brainer," as the club wanted to ensure that football fans could enjoy the Socceroos' match without conflict. Wilkshire, who will be traveling to the US to cover the World Cup for broadcaster SBS, expressed his commitment to providing supporters with the opportunity to watch Australia compete in what he described as the "greatest show on Earth."

Nationwide Support for the Socceroos

The Wolves are part of a broader movement among clubs across Australia to avoid scheduling matches during the Socceroos' World Cup games. For instance, Swinburne FC has chosen to forfeit its matches to allow fans to watch the opener against Turkey. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has also taken steps to ensure that fans can support the team, stating that "a few dickheads" should not hinder the public's enthusiasm. In Sydney, landmarks have been illuminated in green and gold, and live broadcasts of every Socceroos match will be shown on large screens at various locations, including Tumbalong Park and Cathy Freeman Park.

As the Wolves prepare for their crucial clash against APIA Leichhardt, they aim to bounce back from two consecutive 1-0 defeats to UNSW and Marconi Stallions. Wilkshire noted that despite the disappointing results, he was pleased with the team's performance against Marconi, stating, "The boys were great. I can't ask for more in terms of the performance they gave."
