Wollongong Wolves: Controversial call, late strike seal NPL loss | Illawarra Mercury | Wollongong, NSW
The Wollongong Wolves suffered a controversial loss in the NPL after a late goal sealed their fate. A disputed call added to the frustration for the team and fans.

The Wollongong Wolves faced heartbreak on Sunday as a controversial disallowed goal and a stunning late strike led to their third consecutive loss in the NSW NPL. The match, held at Macedonia Park, ended with a thrilling 3-2 victory for Sydney FC, who secured the win with a goal from substitute Dionn Nigro in the first minute of injury time.
Wolves Take Early Lead
The Wolves started the match positively, taking the lead in the 10th minute with a penalty converted by Kazuya Yamamura. However, Sydney FC quickly responded, leveling the score through a well-executed goal by Caelan Marshall-Witte just nine minutes later. Despite Sydney's dominance in the game, the Wolves managed to regain the lead with a goal from Alex Masciovecchio in the 35th minute, only for Zac Fowler to equalize just before halftime, leaving the teams tied at 2-2.
Controversial Decisions Haunt Wolves
A pivotal moment came 10 minutes before the end of the match when the Wolves believed they had scored the winner through Banri Kanaizumi. However, the goal was disallowed after the assistant referee flagged Lachlan Scott for offside, claiming he was interfering with play. Stand-in head coach Julio Miranda expressed his disappointment over the decision, stating, "It's always disappointing when you lose. Getting the goal rubbed out was also disappointing." He added that while he would review the incident, there was little that could be done at that point.
Miranda, who is temporarily managing the team while regular head coach Luke Wilkshire is on commentary duty for SBS at the World Cup, noted that despite the loss, the Wolves showed good energy in the second half. He acknowledged the team's mistakes but felt they had controlled much of the game. "I thought we were in control the majority of the game. But we made some poor errors, which cost us," he said.
As the Wolves reflect on this match, they will be looking to bounce back and secure a much-needed victory in their upcoming fixtures.
