Wellington Phoenix captain Alex Rufer has secured his future with the club by signing a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the team until at least the conclusion of the 2027/28 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

Long-Term Commitment

Having joined the Phoenix as a teenager in 2013, Rufer has been a pivotal figure for the club, especially over the past five seasons as captain. He is now set to embark on his 14th season in Wellington colours, boasting 189 A-League appearances, making him the fourth-most capped player in the club's history. Despite previous speculation regarding a potential move away, Rufer's new deal solidifies his commitment to the Phoenix.

Personal and Professional Growth

The 30-year-old midfielder was honored as the joint Men’s Player of the Season at the club’s annual awards night in April, also receiving the Players’ Player award. Expressing his contentment, Rufer stated, “Wellington is definitely the best place for me and my family at the moment.” He emphasized the importance of family and comfort in his decision, noting, “Being comfortable and being happy off the field was a big reason why this all works.” Rufer also expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming season under head coach Chris Greenacre, mentioning that discussions about the club's future have reignited his excitement for the game.
