Adelaide United defender Bart Vriends has emphasized the need for a strong reaction following the team's exit from the Australia Cup against South Melbourne. He acknowledged that the Reds did not perform to their usual standards during the match on Thursday night.

Lessons from the Australia Cup Exit

Vriends expressed his disappointment but noted that the defeat serves as a valuable lesson for the squad. With a crucial AFC Champions League Elite Preliminary clash approaching on August 11, the focus now shifts to securing a place in the group stage. He stated, “Yeah, obviously extremely disappointed. First of all, credit to South Melbourne. They played a really strong game and they were prepared to push us all around the pitch in one vs one situations.”

He reflected on the team's struggles, saying, “We didn’t manage to play through them... we started running everywhere and trying to find spaces, but it got us very out of structure.” Vriends acknowledged that the team is typically known for its strong structure, which was lacking in this match. He reiterated, “Again, credit to South Melbourne, because they did it extremely well, but we’re very, very disappointed with how we showed up.”

Facing the Challenge

Vriends praised South Melbourne for their performance, noting, “They play with their hearts and they go for their one and only chance to beat an A-League side. They deserved the win last night.” He described the match as chaotic, highlighting that the Reds were unable to respond effectively to the pressure applied by their opponents. “The problem was that we were just below our normal standards, and that’s extremely disappointing,” he added. However, he remains optimistic, stating, “But we’ll take it as a lesson, and it’s still early in the season.”

Looking Ahead

When asked if the early stage of the season contributed to the team's performance, Vriends dismissed the idea of making excuses. He stated, “Even though it’s the early phases of the season... we should be able to match them in every part of the game.” He acknowledged that while South Melbourne is fit, the Reds should have performed better. “There’s no excuse for that,” he concluded.

Regarding squad depth, Vriends mentioned that it is not his place to discuss recruitment, but he expressed confidence in the current squad's strength despite the departures of Luka Jovanovic and Yaya Dukuly. He also clarified that the upcoming ACL Elite Preliminary clash did not affect their motivation for the Cup, stating, “We wanted to go far in the Cup. We actually wanted to win the Cup.”
