The USA defeated the Socceroos 2-0 in their second Group D match, showcasing strong performance and strategy. This win boosts their chances of advancing in the tournament.

The United States secured a 2-0 victory over the Socceroos in their second Group D match held in Seattle. Despite a stronger performance from Australia in the second half, two first-half goals from the home side sealed the win.
Match Overview
Australia made two changes to the lineup that triumphed over Türkiye in their opening match, with Nishan Velupillay and Mathew Leckie stepping in for Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda. The game commenced at a lively pace, with Australia creating an opportunity within the first minute as Mo Toure applied pressure to take a shot from a tight angle.
However, it was the USA that struck first. Folarin Balogun made a significant run down the left flank, delivering a cross that deflected off Cameron Burgess and found the back of the net. Australia responded quickly, with Mathew Leckie shooting wide shortly after the goal. Leckie was also pivotal in generating a series of corners in the 23rd minute.
Goals and Tactical Changes
The United States maintained control for much of the first half, with Australia defending resolutely. The match had a more open dynamic compared to their previous encounter, as the USA's high pressing created numerous challenges for the Socceroos. Just before halftime, the USA doubled their lead from a set piece. A free kick directed to Sergino Dest resulted in a deflected shot that fell to Alex Freeman, who converted from close range. Although the goal was initially ruled offside, it was awarded after a VAR review.
In an effort to shift the momentum, Socceroos coach Popovic made three substitutions at halftime. Jason Geria took over from Cameron Burgess in defense, Connor Metcalfe replaced Nishan Velupillay, and Nestory Irankunda came on for Mo Toure. Early in the second half, Alessandro Circati showcased his defensive skills by blocking a shot from Balogun, who had broken through on goal.
Mathew Leckie was forced to leave the match due to injury 15 minutes into the second half, making way for Cristian Volpato, who made his World Cup debut. Volpato quickly became involved, receiving a well-placed pass from Connor Metcalfe that set up Irankunda. However, Volpato's first touch resulted in a shot that went over the bar.
Australia began to gain more possession and create opportunities as the second half progressed, with Volpato and Irankunda playing key roles alongside Metcalfe. Jackson Irvine was the final substitution for the Socceroos, coming on for Paul Okon-Engstl.
