The United States government has announced a temporary waiver of visa bond requirements for eligible FIFA World Cup ticket-holders from 50 countries. This decision, confirmed by a State Department official, aims to facilitate travel for fans attending the tournament this summer.

Visa Bond Waiver Details

Since last year, citizens from certain nations have been required to pay visa bonds ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 to obtain tourist visas for the U.S. These deposits are refunded upon departure and were introduced to mitigate the risk of visa overstays. However, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Mora Namdar stated that the bond requirement will be lifted for fans who purchased World Cup tickets and registered through the FIFA PASS system by April 15, 2026. This waiver also extends to eligible players, coaches, and team staff from the affected countries.

Countries Affected

Among the nations subject to the visa bond rules, five have qualified for the World Cup: Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Tunisia. Despite the waiver, some restrictions remain for countries such as Haiti and Iran, whose citizens face broader entry bans under U.S. immigration policies. Namdar emphasized the administration's commitment to balancing national security priorities with the facilitation of legitimate travel for the World Cup.

The FIFA World Cup is set to take place in June and July, with matches hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament will kick off on June 11 in Mexico, followed by the first match in the U.S. on June 12 in Inglewood, California, and concluding with the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The U.S. introduced the FIFA PASS system in January to expedite visa processing for ticket-holders, and the Department of Homeland Security has assured international visitors that they will face no issues if they hold legal immigration status.
