Union are close to a deal to bring back Mark McKenzie
The Union are in advanced talks to re-sign Mark McKenzie, a move that could bolster their defensive lineup. Fans are eager to see the return of the talented player.
The Philadelphia Union are nearing an agreement to welcome back Mark McKenzie, who is set to rejoin the club in January after a stint in Europe. The 27-year-old centerback will transfer from the French club Toulouse for a fee of approximately $2.5 million, as confirmed by multiple sources to The Inquirer.
McKenzie's Journey Back to Chester
Nearly six years after the Union first launched McKenzie’s career in Europe, he is making a return to Chester. McKenzie initially moved to Belgium’s Genk in early 2021 for $6 million before transferring to Toulouse in the summer of 2024 for $3.2 million. Throughout his time abroad, he has established himself as one of the top American centerbacks, earning 30 caps with the U.S. national team and participating in this summer’s World Cup.
Potential Pairing with Neil Pierre
Upon his return, McKenzie is expected to form a centerback partnership with the Union's promising young talent, Neil Pierre. The 18-year-old, standing at 6-foot-7, has garnered attention from scouts globally, including from Spain's Barcelona. While there may be future interest in Pierre, the Union aims to have him and McKenzie play together to strengthen their defense.
As the Union prepare for the upcoming “sprint season” leading into the 2027 calendar flip, McKenzie’s arrival could significantly bolster their squad. The transfer fee will classify him as a Designated Player under current MLS roster rules, which may change next year. Regardless, McKenzie is poised to become a key figure for the club upon his return.
