Tottenham sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for club-record £85m fee - BBC Sport
Tottenham Hotspur has completed the signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for a club-record fee of £85 million, highlighting their ambition for the upcoming season.

Tottenham Hotspur has officially signed midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United for a club-record fee of £85 million. This move marks a significant addition to Spurs' squad as they aim to strengthen their midfield options.
Player Background and Experience
The 21-year-old Fernandes has accumulated 72 Premier League starts over the past two seasons, having played for both Southampton and West Ham, although both clubs faced relegation to the Championship during his tenure. Despite his young age, Fernandes has already gained valuable experience in England's top flight and has made one appearance for the Portugal national team, although he is not part of their World Cup squad.
Manager's Praise and Future Prospects
Spurs head coach Roberto de Zerbi expressed his admiration for Fernandes, stating, "I've admired Mateus for a long time because he combines quality on the ball with the intensity and intelligence that are so important in the way we want to play." De Zerbi highlighted Fernandes' ability to perform under pressure, his work ethic, and his courage to make impactful plays in challenging situations. He believes that Tottenham provides the ideal environment for Fernandes to further develop his skills.
Tottenham faced competition from Manchester United for Fernandes, but the latter was unwilling to meet the agreed fee. The signing comes after Spurs had a bid for Sandro Tonali rejected by Newcastle, although they have since agreed on a £100 million deal for the Italian midfielder. Fernandes is the fifth player to join Tottenham this summer, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and defenders Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Jan Paul van Hecke.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the move, Fernandes said, "I'm very excited for this next step. Spurs is a massive club and the head coach was a key part of why I have decided to join." He emphasized the shared vision he has with De Zerbi regarding their approach to football, aiming to compete fiercely in every match.
