Tottenham Hotspur has officially announced the permanent transfer of young striker Will Lankshear to Championship side Middlesbrough. The move guarantees Spurs a fee of £10 million, which could increase to £20 million if certain add-ons are met.

Details of the Transfer

As part of the agreement, Tottenham will retain matching rights for any future offers for Lankshear, along with a 20 percent sell-on clause. This arrangement is seen as a financially savvy decision for Spurs, considering Lankshear's limited first-team appearances.

In their statement regarding the transfer, Tottenham noted that Lankshear joined their Academy from Sheffield United in August 2022. He was the top scorer during the Under-21s’ Premier League 2 title-winning season in 2023/24 and was recognized as the Premier League 2 Player of the Season. Lankshear made his first-team debut in October 2024 against Ferencvaros in the UEFA Europa League, going on to make six senior appearances and scoring once against Galatasaray in November 2024. His Premier League debut came in December 2024 against Fulham.

Loan Spells and Rising Stock

Following his debut season, Lankshear spent time on loan in the Championship, first with West Brom and then with Oxford United, where he scored 12 goals in 46 appearances, including 11 in 43 league matches. His performance at Oxford significantly boosted his profile, despite the club's relegation to League One.

Interest in Lankshear grew, with clubs such as Sporting CP, Southampton, and Wolves making inquiries, but Tottenham declined those offers. The transfer to Middlesbrough was finalized swiftly after negotiations advanced on Monday, following an influx of funds for Middlesbrough from Chelsea's £117 million transfer of Morgan Rogers.

Lankshear's departure marks the fifth player to leave Tottenham this summer, joining Alfie Devine and Alejo Veliz, who have moved to Preston and Bahia, respectively. Spurs wish Lankshear the best in his future endeavors.
