Toronto FC signs midfielder Nelson Palacio from Real Salt Lake
Toronto FC has bolstered its midfield by signing Nelson Palacio from Real Salt Lake. This move aims to strengthen the team's performance in the upcoming season.

Toronto FC has officially announced the signing of Colombian midfielder Nelson Palacio from Real Salt Lake, continuing their active summer transfer window. The club confirmed the acquisition on Monday, revealing that they have invested $1.1 million for the 25-year-old player, with the potential for the fee to increase to $1.65 million based on performance-related metrics. Additionally, Real Salt Lake will receive a percentage of any future transfer or trade involving Palacio.
Palacio's Role and Background
Palacio, a defensive midfielder, fills a crucial gap for Toronto FC, particularly following Deiby Flores' departure to the Saudi Pro League last summer. Since joining Real Salt Lake in 2023, he has made 55 appearances. Notably, he spent the 2025-26 season on loan at FC Zürich in Switzerland, where he played a significant role in the team's midfield, contributing to their tenth-place finish in the league with 32 appearances. Although he missed several matches due to injury and yellow card accumulation, he was primarily a starter during his time in Switzerland.
Strategic Signing and Future Prospects
Palacio qualifies for MLS’ U22 player initiative, which offers salary cap relief for younger players. This initiative allows players who are 22 or younger in their first eligible MLS season to occupy a U22 slot until they turn 25. Toronto FC's decision to pursue Palacio was made early in the winter, as they sought potential U22 opportunities. Sporting director Hernandez noted that they anticipated Palacio's return to Salt Lake if his purchase option was not activated.
This signing comes as Toronto FC looks to strengthen their midfield, particularly in defensive capabilities. With a solid attacking lineup, including players like Djordje Mihailovic, the addition of Palacio is expected to provide a more balanced approach to their gameplay. In recent moves, the club also announced the end of José Cifuentes’ loan from Rangers and the buyouts of defender Henry Wingo and forward Cassius Mailula, as Hernandez works to refresh the roster ahead of the MLS restart on July 16.
