Sydney FC sign striker Gabriel Popovic on two-year deal

Sydney FC has secured the signing of striker Gabriel Popovic on a two-year deal. The addition aims to enhance the team's offensive capabilities in the upcoming season.

Sydney FC has bolstered its attacking options with the acquisition of striker Gabriel Popovic on a two-year contract. The 22-year-old joins the Sky Blues after a stint with Perth Glory, where he made nine appearances and netted two goals during the 2025-26 season.

Popovic's Journey

Before his time at Perth Glory, Popovic had experience playing in Greece, Croatia, and Italy. He expressed enthusiasm about returning to Sydney, stating, “I’m incredibly excited to be coming home to Sydney. This is where I grew up, where I first fell in love with football.” He added that wearing the Sky Blue jersey is a source of pride for him and is eager to contribute to a club that finished last season with significant momentum.

Coach's Perspective

Head coach Patrick Kisnorbo welcomed the addition of Popovic, describing him as “a strong, dominant number nine with a real passion for the game.” Kisnorbo noted that Popovic’s experience across various leagues will be beneficial for his development and will provide the team with a different attacking option. The signing follows the recent acquisition of former academy player Jake Hollman, who joined Sydney FC on a three-year deal after leaving Walsall.

As Sydney FC prepares for the upcoming season, including the Sydney Super Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur and the Australia Cup 2026 campaign, Popovic is set to join his new teammates at the end of June. The club is also expected to be active in the transfer market to fill the gaps left by seven off-season departures, including notable players such as Joe Lolley and Joel King.
