Sutherland Sharks FC achieved a historic milestone on Saturday, securing their inaugural spot in the Australian Championship with a 2-1 victory over St George City at Seymour Shaw. This win not only marked their first entry into the Championship but also solidified their position in the top six of the NPL Men's NSW finals, highlighting a remarkable turnaround after a challenging start to the season.

Sharks Dominate Early Play

The Sharks began the match with intensity, creating early chances in front of a vibrant home crowd. Seung-Joo Choi nearly scored directly from a corner, but St George City goalkeeper Jack Kenny managed to deflect the ball over the crossbar. Sutherland continued to apply pressure, with Jamie Percevski coming close with a header that went over the bar. St George City had their opportunities as well, with Spencer Webster's effort in the 12th minute going wide.

Decisive Goals Secure Victory

In the 28th minute, Sutherland's persistence paid off when Yianni Nicolaou headed home from a well-placed cross, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead. St George City attempted to respond through a set piece, but Lucas Bedleg's shot failed to trouble Sharks goalkeeper Danijel Nizic. The Sharks doubled their lead just before halftime in the 42nd minute, as mid-season signing Diego Bonilla scored following a well-executed team move. St George City had a chance to reduce the deficit before the break, but Brodie Clarkson's volley went wide.

After the interval, Sutherland nearly extended their lead when Ryley Hollingdale's effort struck the post. St George City made tactical changes to regain control and came close to scoring when Webster's deflected shot narrowly missed the target. The Sharks continued to search for a third goal, with Richard Shoueiki's cross finding Percevski, who headed over in the 78th minute. St George City finally found the net in the 81st minute when substitute Paolo Mitry scored, making it 2-1. The closing moments were tense as St George City sought an equalizer, with substitute Tariq Ercan missing a header wide.
