St. Louis CITY SC has officially signed 26-year-old Romanian attacking midfielder Alexandru Mățan, who previously played for Panetolikos FC in the Greek First Division. The contract extends through the 2028-29 season, with an option for the 2029-30 season.

Reunion with Coach Yoann Damet

Mățan reunites with Head Coach Yoann Damet, having previously worked together during Mățan's two seasons with the Columbus Crew. St. Louis CITY SC also acquired the right of first refusal for Mățan from Columbus Crew in exchange for $100,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money. The midfielder will join the roster pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 visa, and he will occupy an International Roster slot.

Impressive MLS Career

During his four seasons in Major League Soccer with the Columbus Crew from 2021 to 2024, Mățan made 101 appearances, scoring six goals and providing 15 assists. His standout season came in 2023, where he played a key role in helping the Crew secure the MLS Cup. That year, he scored his first MLS goal against Red Bull New York and achieved a career-high three assists in a match against Atlanta United. Mățan finished the season tied for the team lead in assists with a total of 11. In the following season, he recorded his first professional hat trick in a 4-0 victory over New England and contributed to the Crew's Leagues Cup triumph.

Before his time in MLS, Mățan began his professional career at just 16 years old with FC Viitorul Constanța in Romania, where he made 53 appearances and scored three goals. He also gained valuable experience in the UEFA Europa League. Most recently, he played for Panetolikos F.C., where he netted six goals and provided three assists in 40 appearances across all competitions.

Throughout his career, Mățan has won a total of six professional trophies, including the MLS Cup, Leagues Cup, and Campeones Cup with Columbus Crew, as well as the Romanian League title, Super Cup title, and league cup title with FC Viitorul Constanța.
