The Seattle Sounders have officially announced the signing of striker Dejan Joveljić from Sporting Kansas City. This move marks a significant addition to the team, as it comes with a transfer fee of $6 million and a four-year contract extension for Joveljić, which will keep him with the Sounders until at least the end of the 2029–30 season, with an option for 2030–31.

Major Investment in Joveljić

After several seasons of limited activity in the transfer market, the Sounders have made a bold investment in Joveljić, potentially committing close to $20 million when factoring in his contract extension. This investment surpasses any single signing made by the club since the acquisition of Clint Dempsey.

Joveljić's Impressive Track Record

Dejan Joveljić brings a strong resume to Seattle, having turned professional at the age of 16 with Red Star Belgrade and scoring over 100 career goals. His MLS tenure includes 60 goals over six seasons, highlighted by a standout performance in 2024 where he netted 21 goals and provided 8 assists, contributing to the LA Galaxy's MLS Cup victory. In his last two seasons with Sporting KC, he scored 26 goals despite the team’s struggles. Additionally, Joveljić has represented Serbia internationally, earning nine caps and scoring two goals.

Sounders General Manager Craig Waibel expressed enthusiasm about the signing, stating, “We’re thrilled to add a player of Dejan’s caliber to our group. He is a proven goal scorer in the prime of his career with a track record of producing at a high level and delivering in big moments.” Waibel emphasized that Joveljić not only enhances the team's immediate prospects but also serves as a crucial asset for future success.

Roster Adjustments

To accommodate their new Designated Player, the Sounders have also restructured Albert Rusnák's contract, though specific details of this agreement have not been disclosed. Head coach Brian Schmetzer praised Rusnák, stating, “Albert is a super talented player. If we have him the next few years, I’d be happy.”

Joveljić has already begun training with his new teammates and is anticipated to make his debut when the Sounders face the Chicago Fire this Saturday.
