Socceroos Head Coach Tony Popovic signs new contract
Tony Popovic has officially signed a new contract as the head coach of the Socceroos, solidifying his position as they gear up for future challenges on the international stage.

Socceroos Head Coach Tony Popovic has officially signed a contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the national team until the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. This announcement was made by Football Australia on Friday, just ahead of the Socceroos' first match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Türkiye in Vancouver on Sunday.
Popovic's Commitment to the Socceroos
Expressing his enthusiasm, Popovic stated, “I’m delighted that I will continue to coach the Socceroos through to the AFC Asian Cup 2027.” He emphasized the honor of leading the national team, highlighting his dedication to the role and the importance of the upcoming World Cup. “My absolute focus right now is on the FIFA World Cup 2026,” he added, underlining his commitment to ensuring the team is well-prepared for their group matches against Türkiye, the United States, and Paraguay.
Achievements and Future Goals
Since taking charge in September 2024, Popovic has successfully guided the Socceroos to automatic qualification for the World Cup, a feat not accomplished since 2014. He has a rich history with the team, having made 58 appearances as a player, and will now be the first person to represent Australia as both a player and Head Coach at a FIFA World Cup.
Football Australia CEO Martin Kugeler praised the contract extension, stating, “Tony is a world-class coach, and he has proven his ability to deliver results while developing talent at the same time.” Kugeler noted that Popovic's leadership has not only secured direct qualification for the World Cup but has also contributed to building a stronger squad for the future. The extension is seen as a strategic move to ensure stability and continuity as the team prepares for both the World Cup and the upcoming AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
