Sky Blues find Lolley replacement in J-League star | The Canberra Times | Canberra, ACT
The Sky Blues have found a replacement for Lolley in a promising J-League player, aiming to strengthen their lineup for the upcoming season.

Sydney FC has secured the services of Urawa Red Diamonds captain Sekine Takahiro as a replacement for Joe Lolley in their A-League Men lineup. The announcement was made on Thursday, shortly after Lolley confirmed his transfer to Newcastle on a two-year contract.
New Signing Details
The 31-year-old Sekine, who has been a key player for one of Asia's premier clubs, has signed a three-year deal with the Sky Blues. Lolley's departure comes after a challenging final season with Sydney, which was marred by a serious ankle injury that limited his contributions. The 33-year-old winger played his last match as a substitute in the grand final, where Sydney lost 1-0 to Auckland FC, marking his 116th appearance for the club.
Experience and Versatility
With an impressive track record at Urawa, Sekine brings a wealth of experience to Sydney FC, having won multiple titles including the AFC Champions League twice (2017, 2022), the Emperor's Cup (2021), the Japanese Super Cup (2022), and the J-League Cup (2016). His familiarity with A-League competition, having faced Sydney and Western Sydney in AFC Champions League matches, adds to his readiness for the new challenge.
Sydney FC coach Patrick Kisnorbo expressed his enthusiasm for the signing, highlighting Sekine's versatility and leadership qualities. "Takahiro is an outstanding footballer whose career speaks for itself," Kisnorbo stated. He noted Sekine's ability to play across various positions, which will provide the team with significant tactical flexibility.
As Sekine embarks on this new chapter in his career, he expressed his excitement about joining Sydney FC, acknowledging the club's rich history and ambitions. "I'm incredibly excited to join Sydney FC and experience a new challenge in the A-League," he said.
