The Seattle Sounders have taken a significant step to improve their recent struggles by signing Serbian international forward Dejan Joveljic from Sporting Kansas City for a fee of $6 million. The announcement was made on Tuesday, with Joveljic committing to a contract that extends through the 2029-30 season, including an option for the 2030-31 season.

Joveljic's Impact and Recent Performance

At 27 years old, Joveljic has been designated as a Designated Player by the Sounders, indicating his crucial role in the team's future plans. The Sounders have faced a challenging period, having not won an MLS regular-season match since May 13. Their recent draw against FC Cincinnati ended an eight-game losing streak in league play. Additionally, the Sounders were eliminated in the group stage of the Leagues Cup, where they lost two out of three matches, further highlighting their difficult summer.

Joveljic arrives with a commendable scoring record, having netted 107 goals in 11 professional seasons across Europe and the United States, starting his career with Red Star Belgrade. He played a key role in helping the Los Angeles Galaxy secure the MLS Cup in 2024, scoring 21 goals in 33 matches before being traded to Sporting Kansas City for $4 million. Notably, he was the first player to be transferred under the league's cash-for-trade mechanism, which was introduced in 2025. The $6 million fee for Joveljic marks the third-highest expenditure on a cashfer transaction since its inception.
