Salford City appoint Peter Cklamovski after sacking Karl Robinson - BBC Sport

Salford City has officially appointed Peter Cklamovski as their new manager after parting ways with Karl Robinson. The club seeks to revitalize its performance under new leadership.

Salford City has made a surprising move by appointing Peter Cklamovski as their new manager on a long-term contract, a decision that traces back to his time in Japan eight years ago.

Background and Connection

Although Cklamovski may not be a familiar name in English football, he is well-known to Salford's chief executive, Gavin Fleig. Fleig joined the League Two club in October 2025 after spending 17 years with the City Football Group, where he held the role of director of talent management for the last seven years. During his tenure, he encountered numerous coaches and managers across CFG's 12 clubs, including Cklamovski, who was making a name for himself as an assistant to Ange Postecoglou at Yokohama F Marinos, the J-League title winners.

While Postecoglou's career path has been widely covered, Cklamovski's journey through clubs like Shimizu S-Pulse, Montedio Yamagata, FC Tokyo, and the Malaysia national team has received less attention. The 47-year-old Australian has garnered respect for both his results and his attacking style of play. Fleig had always intended to reach out to Cklamovski if he found himself in a position to hire a head coach.

Decision-Making Process

Following Salford's defeat to Notts County in the League Two play-off final last month, the club decided to part ways with Karl Robinson. Fleig recommended Cklamovski for the role, stating, "You go through the normal processes... Through all those steps and everyone we've spoken to, Peter was the outstanding candidate on all the metrics that are important to us." At the time, Cklamovski was preparing for an Asean Championship campaign with the Malaysia national team, yet he was also reflecting on his career and his ambition to succeed in Europe.

Coincidentally, Cklamovski was in the UK with his family at the end of an extended holiday, during which they had enjoyed several football matches, including Everton's thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester City on May 4. When Fleig reached out, Cklamovski was scheduled to return to Malaysia that evening. However, after a brief conversation, he decided to cancel his flight, demonstrating his eagerness for the opportunity.

Emphasis on Intent

Salford's management was not only impressed by Cklamovski's data-driven credentials but also by his clear intent to take on the challenge. This combination of analytical metrics and personal motivation ultimately led to his appointment as the new head coach.

With Cklamovski at the helm, Salford City hopes to embark on a new chapter in their quest for success in League Two.
