Borussia Dortmund has officially announced the signing of Greek international Konstantinos Karetsas from KRC Genk. The deal, confirmed on August 3, 2026, sees Karetsas join the Bundesliga runners-up on a five-year contract that extends until June 30, 2031. Reports indicate that Dortmund will pay a guaranteed transfer fee of €30 million, with potential bonuses that could raise the total to €32 million.

Transfer Details and Financial Arrangements

As part of the agreement, Genk will receive a ten-percent share of any future transfer profit. According to Sport Bild, Karetsas' base salary is estimated at around €3.5 million per year, which may increase with performance-related bonuses. The transfer saga concluded after Dortmund raised their offer beyond €30 million following Genk's rejection of an earlier bid. Initially, Genk sought a guaranteed €35 million, with the overall package potentially reaching €40 million.

Role at Dortmund and Competition for Places

Karetsas is anticipated to take on the creative role left vacant by Julian Brandt, who departed Dortmund after the club confirmed in March that they would not extend his contract. Brandt subsequently signed with Ajax. Additionally, Dortmund is looking to bolster their attacking options following Karim Adeyemi's €22 million transfer to Barcelona. Primarily an attacking midfielder, Karetsas is also adept at starting on the right and transitioning into central positions. His skill set, characterized by close control, agility, and vision, is expected to enhance Dortmund's attacking dynamics.

Additionally, he contributed two goals and five assists in 11 appearances during the UEFA Euro.
