New York City FC has officially signed forward Bénie Traoré from Swiss club FC Basel 1893, making him the latest addition to the team as a Designated Player. The announcement was made on June 29, 2026, and Traoré's contract extends through the 2029/2030 season, with an option for the 2030/2031 season.

Traoré's Background and Achievements

The 23-year-old forward, who hails from Ivory Coast, will join NYCFC once his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa are processed. Traoré becomes the 11th Designated Player in the history of New York City FC, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his time in the Swiss Super League, Swiss Cup, and UEFA Europa League. During his two seasons with FC Basel, he made 80 appearances, netting 25 goals and providing 15 assists.

In the 2024/2025 season, Traoré played a pivotal role in leading FC Basel to their 21st Swiss Super League Championship, finishing as the club's second-highest scorer with 13 goals. He also contributed significantly in cup competitions, scoring in the Swiss Cup Semifinal and starting in the Final, which saw Basel claim their 14th Swiss Cup title.

Before his tenure at FC Basel, Traoré showcased his talent at various clubs across Ivory Coast, Sweden, England, and France, where he accumulated 25 goals and 10 assists in 82 matches. He began his career at ASEC Mimosas, before moving to BK Häcken in Sweden, where he was instrumental in their Svenska Cupen victory during the 2022/2023 season, contributing three goals and three assists.
