Melbourne Victory sign Wales international defender Tom Lockyer

Melbourne Victory has secured the signing of Tom Lockyer, a defender with international experience for Wales. This move aims to strengthen the team's defensive lineup.

Melbourne Victory has officially signed Welsh defender Tom Lockyer as they prepare for the upcoming 2026-27 Isuzu UTE A-League season. The 31-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the team after a notable career in England, where he captained Luton Town during their recent tenure in the Premier League, earning a strong fan following.

Lockyer's Journey and Resilience

Lockyer, who has represented Wales 16 times, made headlines in 2023 when he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch while playing for Luton Town. Thanks to the prompt actions of paramedics, he survived the incident and took a two-year hiatus from football. He eventually returned to the sport with his boyhood club, Bristol Rovers, where he made his professional debut in 2013 and celebrated his 300th club appearance.

Excitement for New Challenges

Expressing his enthusiasm for joining Melbourne Victory, Lockyer stated, “I am thrilled to have joined Melbourne Victory and cannot wait to get this next chapter of my career underway in such an amazing city.” He emphasized his eagerness to embrace new experiences and challenges in a fresh environment, adding, “Now it is time to get to work and be ready for every battle ahead.”

Melbourne Victory's Director of Football, John Didulica, highlighted Lockyer's leadership and experience, noting, “We are especially pleased to have brought a player of Tom’s calibre, courage and leadership qualities to the A-League and to Melbourne Victory.” Lockyer's addition follows a busy week for the club, which also secured the signing of German defender Philipp Ziereis and announced the extensions of other players, including academy graduate Franco Lino.
