Melbourne City has successfully extended the contract of veteran midfielder Mathew Leckie for another year, with an option for an additional season. This move ensures that the experienced Socceroo will continue to play a pivotal role in the team's plans for the upcoming season.

Leckie's Impact at Melbourne City

Since joining Melbourne City ahead of the 2021/22 season, Leckie has established himself as a crucial player, making 90 appearances across all competitions. During this time, he has scored 20 goals and provided 15 assists, contributing significantly to one of the club's most successful eras. A two-time Isuzu UTE A-League Premiership winner, Leckie made history in the 2025 Isuzu UTE A-League Grand Final, where he played a key role in the team’s 1-0 victory over Melbourne Victory, earning the Joe Marston Medal for his performance.

International Legacy and Future Goals

Leckie has also made notable contributions on the international stage, scoring a vital goal for Australia against Denmark during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He recently became one of only four Socceroos to represent Australia at four FIFA World Cups. Now at 35 years old and settled in a central midfield position, Leckie is expected to remain an influential figure in Aurelio Vidmar’s squad for the 2026/27 season.

Leckie is the sixth player to sign a new contract with Melbourne City this off-season, joining teammates such as Ben Mazzeo, Harrison Delbridge, and Andrew Nabbout. The club has also made new signings, including promising teenager Quinn MacNicol and goalkeeper Macklin Freke from Brisbane Roar, following the departure of Socceroos keeper Patrick Beach to French side Troyes.
