Melbourne Victory has strengthened its defensive lineup by signing international players Thomas Lockyer and Philipp Ziereis ahead of the upcoming 2026-27 A-League Men season. This move comes as the club looks to rebuild following the departures of former captain Roderick Miranda and Lachlan Jackson, with new head coach Giovanni Savarese leading the charge.

Lockyer's Impressive Background

Thomas Lockyer, a 31-year-old defender, joins Victory after a successful stint with Bristol Rovers in England’s League Two. He is a seasoned international, having represented Wales 16 times and participated in both the UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Notably, Lockyer captained Luton Town to the Premier League in 2023, marking a significant achievement for the club after a 31-year absence from the top flight. His season was unfortunately cut short due to a cardiac arrest on the pitch in December 2023.

Ziereis Brings Experience

Philipp Ziereis, a 33-year-old centre-back, has also signed a two-year contract with Melbourne Victory. He is well-known for his nine-year tenure at German club St Pauli, where he played 159 matches. Ziereis has also had a stint with Austria LASK before joining Victory, bringing a wealth of experience to the squad.
