Marconi Maintain Title Charge With Convincing Win Over Wanderers - NPL Men's NSW

Marconi achieved a significant victory against Wanderers, reinforcing their position in the title race of the NPL Men's NSW. The team's performance highlighted their skill and ambition.

Marconi Stallions continued their strong performance in the National Premier Leagues Men’s NSW, maintaining a four-point lead at the top of the table with a decisive 3-0 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday at Marconi Stadium.

First Half Dominance

The match saw Marconi take control early, with first-half goals from Franco Maya and captain Marko Jesic giving them a solid advantage by halftime. The Stallions, known for their attacking prowess, faced off against the Wanderers, who also boast one of the league's top offenses. Both teams created opportunities in the opening minutes, with Alat Abdul-Rahman and Damien Tsekenis testing the opposing defenses.

Jesic came close to scoring twice with free-kick attempts, the first of which nearly found the back of the net as it skimmed the crossbar. The breakthrough came just after the half-hour mark when Maya executed a brilliant half-volley following a corner that was initially cleared by Wanderers goalkeeper Lucas Sinnot. Maya's strike found the top corner, putting Marconi ahead.

Securing the Victory

Just four minutes later, Jesic scored on his third attempt, doubling the lead. After Jack Armson created space on the right, he set up Tyren Burnie, whose cutback allowed Jesic to strike first time, catching Sinnot off guard. The Stallions aimed to extend their lead in the second half, nearly scoring again shortly after the break when Tsekenis's effort was brilliantly saved by Sinnot.

However, Tsekenis would not be denied, as he headed in the final goal of the match in the 74th minute, ensuring a comfortable win for Marconi. Head coach Peter Tsekenis praised his team's performance, stating, “It was a very good performance against a team that scores a lot of goals. We kept them pretty quiet and I thought we played some really good football against a good footballing team.”

Reflecting on the match, Jesic noted that their second goal provided crucial control over the game, saying, “It was always good to score, but it was also good to get that little buffer that we needed.” With this victory, Marconi now looks ahead to their upcoming Traditional Derby against Sydney United 58.
