Man Utd agree deal with Chelsea for Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos - BBC Sport
Manchester United has finalized a deal with Chelsea for Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos. This transfer highlights United's strategy to bolster their midfield options.

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Chelsea for Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos in a deal worth £50 million. The negotiations have advanced rapidly following United's expression of interest over the weekend.
Details of the Transfer
United will pay an initial £48 million for Santos, with an additional £2 million contingent on 'achievable' add-ons. Chelsea has also secured a 10% sell-on clause as part of the agreement. Santos is now cleared to undergo a medical examination, coinciding with fellow Brazilian Ederson's medical ahead of his £35 million transfer from Atalanta after Brazil's exit from the World Cup.
Addressing Midfield Concerns
This transfer comes as United's senior players prepare to return for pre-season training on Thursday, addressing a pressing need in their midfield following the departure of Casemiro. The veteran midfielder's contract ended, prompting United to prioritize strengthening this area. Although they initially targeted Manuel Ugarte, he has been sidelined due to a serious knee injury. United's attempts to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest were thwarted by a hefty asking price exceeding £110 million, and their pursuit of West Ham's Mateus Fernandes ended when he opted for Tottenham instead.
With Kobbie Mainoo still participating in the World Cup with England, United faced the prospect of starting their pre-season campaign against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18 with only Mason Mount as a recognized senior midfielder in the squad.
Fans' Reactions and Future Prospects
Santos is set to be Chelsea's third major departure this summer, following the sales of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Tyrique George to Everton. While Santos may not have been a primary focus for fans—who were more interested in players like Aurelien Tchouameni—he possesses qualities that align well with United's needs. With 28 Premier League appearances, including a loan spell at Nottingham Forest, Santos is familiar with the league and at 22 years old, he has significant potential for growth. His arrival is expected to inject the energy that United's midfield has been lacking.
However, some supporters express concern over Chelsea's willingness to sell Santos, especially as they prepare for a season without European competition under new manager Xabi.
