The controversy ignited when One Nation leader Pauline Hanson suggested that the Socceroos embodied her vision of a monoculture. Mabil, upon arriving at Adelaide Airport, dismissed the idea that Australia is not a multicultural nation, asserting that his teammates remained focused on their performance and representation of Australia during the tournament. He stated, "When somebody tried to divide people based on certain things, because you don't pick where you're born, the colour of your skin." Mabil, who became an Australian citizen after moving to Adelaide at the age of 10 from a refugee camp in Kenya, highlighted the richness that multiculturalism brings to society. He remarked, "They're missing out on what others can bring and that's what multicultural does, it brings other flavours to the table instead of just one thing." In response to the controversy, a One Nation spokesperson claimed that the party's vision was not divisive and accused others of politicizing the Socceroos' situation.

The debate was further fueled by Senator Hanson's remarks at the National Press Club, where she stated that while Australia is a multiracial society, it cannot be a multicultural one. She called for an end to the long-standing policy of multiculturalism, advocating instead for a monoculture.
