Nottingham Forest has finalized a club-record transfer deal valued at approximately £50 million for Chelsea striker Liam Delap. The 23-year-old is set to undergo a medical examination and is expected to sign a long-term contract at the City Ground within the week.

Delap's Journey to Nottingham Forest

This transfer comes a year after Delap joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town for £30 million, amid interest from clubs like Manchester United and Everton. However, following a challenging season where he managed to score only one Premier League goal due to shoulder and hamstring injuries, Chelsea has opted to make him available for transfer this summer.

Nottingham Forest has been active in the transfer market, having already secured defender Ousmane Diomande from Sporting for £34 million, along with free agents Austrian midfielder Xaver Schlager and goalkeeper Steve Benda. The club also recently sold England midfielder Elliot Anderson to Manchester City for a record £116 million and striker Taiwo Awoniyi to Coventry City for £9 million.

Competition for Strikers

Delap's addition will enhance the competition among Forest's strikers, particularly for Chris Wood and Igor Jesus, who were unable to score in the team's recent 1-0 defeat against Leeds in their Premier League opener. Meanwhile, Chelsea has bolstered its attacking options by signing strikers Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg and Danny Welbeck from Brighton this summer.

Delap's football career began in Derby County's youth system before he moved to Manchester City in 2019. He played a pivotal role in helping City win the FA Youth Cup during the 2019-20 season and had an impressive scoring record in the Premier League 2, netting 24 goals in 20 matches during the 2020-21 season. He made his senior debut for City in September 2020 and subsequently had loan spells in the Championship with Stoke, Preston North End, and Hull City before being sold to Ipswich for £20 million in the summer of 2024, where he scored 12 goals in 37 Premier League appearances.
