Ki Sung-yueng urges Korea football to wake up and reflect - CHOSUNBIZ
Ki Sung-yueng has urged the Korean football community to wake up and reflect on its performance. He believes that self-assessment is crucial for future progress.

Former South Korea national team captain Ki Sung-yueng has called for introspection and a renewed commitment among football stakeholders following the disappointing performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Reflection on World Cup Performance
In a preview video for tvN's You Quiz on the Block, released on July 17, Ki reflected on the team's journey during the tournament. He refrained from singling out any player or coach for criticism, instead posing reflective questions to all involved in Korean football, including himself. Ki traveled to Mexico to witness the action firsthand, returning home after Korea's opening match against the Czech Republic, where they secured a 2-1 victory thanks to Oh Hyeon-gyu's late goal. The initial optimism surrounding the team's prospects quickly faded as they suffered two consecutive 0-1 defeats to Mexico and South Africa, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.
Encouragement and Disappointment
Before departing, Ki attempted to uplift the national team players, believing that the momentum from their victory over the Czech Republic would carry them forward. However, the failure to advance to the round of 32 left him deeply disappointed, particularly as someone who has experienced the World Cup three times. He expressed understanding of the public's frustration, emphasizing the need for a wake-up call within the football community.
A Call for Reform
Ki's remarks were pointed as he urged football figures in Korea to reflect and initiate reforms. He stressed that accountability should not only fall on those outside the national team but also on himself and others involved in the sport. His insights are particularly significant given his extensive experience, having played in 110 A matches and participated in three World Cups. In addition to his international career, Ki has enjoyed success at the club level with teams like Celtic, Swansea City, Sunderland, and Newcastle United, before returning to the K League to play for FC Seoul and Pohang Steelers.
Currently, Ki remains active in the K League, having signed a one-year renewal with Pohang ahead of the 2026 season. This season, he has participated in 14 K League 1 matches, contributing one assist. His comments reflect a desire for improvement and a commitment to the future of Korean football.
