Juan Mata, the star midfielder for Melbourne Victory, has been nominated for the PFA Men’s Footballer of the Year award for 2026. The former World Cup winner had an outstanding 2025/26 season in the A-Leagues, culminating in him receiving the Johnny Warren Medal by a record margin.

Strong Competition

Mata is among a competitive shortlist of six players for the prestigious award. Joining him are recent A-Leagues graduates Nestory Irankunda, who made a significant move to Sporting CP for nearly $26 million, and fellow Socceroos Jordan Bos and Mohamed Toure. Additionally, the list features Socceroos legend Mathew Ryan, currently with Levante UD, and Alessandro Circati, a Perth Glory academy product now at Benfica.

Young Talent Recognized

The PFA Young Footballer of the Year nominees also highlight former A-Leagues talent. Lucas Herrington, a new defender for Hull City, is recognized after transitioning from the A-Leagues to Major League Soccer and then to the Premier League within a year. Another nominee, Paul Okon-Engstler, recently moved from Sydney FC to FC Koln in the Bundesliga after impressing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach also earned a nomination following his transfer from Melbourne City to Estac Troyes, showcasing his strong performances in North America.

All nominees were chosen based on their performances from July 2025 to June 2026, including their contributions in club and international competitions, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup being part of the evaluation period. An expert panel of former players and media representatives selected the nominees, and the winners will be determined through a PFA Member vote.
