Iranian FA says will meet FIFA to seek World Cup assurances in next few days - Yahoo Sports
The Iranian FA is set to engage with FIFA to discuss guarantees for their World Cup involvement. This meeting aims to address concerns related to their status in the tournament.
The Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) is set to meet with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the coming days to discuss assurances regarding Iran's participation in the upcoming World Cup. This meeting comes after Iranian soccer chief Mehdi Taj was denied entry into Canada last week due to his connections with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Concerns Over Respect and Participation
During a statement made on Tuesday, Taj emphasized that Iran would not participate in the tournament unless FIFA could guarantee respect for the country's institutions while they are based in the United States. He noted that the Iranian team is scheduled to play all three of their group matches in the US.
"We will tell FIFA what our expectations are. If they can address them, we will definitely participate," Taj stated in an interview with state broadcaster IRIB. He further expressed that if there is no assurance of respect, then it would be unacceptable for anyone to insult Iran or its governing structures.
Government Support for FFIRI's Position
Taj's position has received support from Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry. Baghaei remarked that the national football team is not merely "traveling" to the United States but is going to compete in the FIFA World Cup. He stressed that it is FIFA's responsibility to ensure all necessary conditions are met for the Iranian team.
Both the US and Canada have designated the IRGC as a "terrorist entity," leading to strict entry regulations for individuals associated with the organization. Taj's past as a high-ranking official within the IRGC has further complicated his situation, raising concerns about the potential for disrespect during the tournament.
As the meeting with FIFA approaches, the FFIRI is hopeful for a resolution that will allow Iran to participate in the World Cup without compromising its national dignity.
