Iran Star Ehsan Hajsafi Questions FIFA Over Visa Delays as World Cup Preparations Hit by Off-Field Turmoil - Yahoo Sports
Iranian star Ehsan Hajsafi has voiced his frustrations regarding FIFA's delays in processing visas, which are affecting the team's preparations for the World Cup. This situation adds to the off-field turmoil surrounding the tournament.
Iran defender Ehsan Hajsafi has voiced concerns regarding FIFA's management of visa delays that have impacted the national team's preparations for the World Cup. Despite the squad's arrival in Mexico, several members of the traveling party are still awaiting U.S. visas.
Visa Complications Affecting Preparations
The Iranian national team, a three-time Asian champion, landed in Tijuana on Sunday morning in anticipation of their World Cup matches, which will take place on American soil. However, the focus upon their arrival was overshadowed by ongoing visa complications that have hindered their preparations for the tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Hajsafi expressed his satisfaction with the team's arrival but raised questions about the delays in securing visas. "First of all, we're very happy that the team has finally arrived, and we're delighted about that," he stated. He further noted, "Thank God, the team's condition is very good," but added, "I do have a complaint about FIFA. Why did it take so long?"
Concerns Over Delegation's Visa Status
The experienced defender pointed out that only players and a limited number of coaching staff members had received their visas, leaving uncertainty for other members of the delegation. "As far as I understand, visas were issued only to the players and a few members of the coaching staff," Hajsafi remarked. He urged FIFA to resolve the issue promptly, hoping for a resolution in the coming days.
Iran's preparations have faced additional challenges due to geopolitical tensions and administrative hurdles. Initially intending to base themselves in Tucson, Arizona, the team shifted their operations to Tijuana after encountering delays in the visa process. Prior to their arrival in Mexico, the squad had been training in Antalya, Turkey, before taking a private charter flight.
Upon arrival, Hajsafi was one of the first to disembark, guiding his teammates through security checks. Supporters gathered at Tijuana Airport to welcome the squad, waving Iranian flags as the players made their way through the terminal. A U.S. official confirmed that all players had ultimately received their visas, but reports indicated that coaches, trainers, and several support staff members were still awaiting approval.
