Iran FA chief says FIFA guarantees over IRGC respect essential for World Cup trip
The head of Iran's football association has stated that FIFA's guarantees regarding the respect for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) are crucial for the country's participation in the upcoming World Cup. This request underscores the ongoing diplomatic complexities surrounding Iran's involvement in international sports.

Mehdi Taj, the head of the Iranian Football Association (FA), has stated that FIFA must ensure that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is treated with respect by the United States for Iran's national team to participate in the upcoming World Cup. The tournament is set to take place from June 11 to July 19, with Iran scheduled to play two matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle.
Concerns Over Treatment in Canada
A recent incident at the Canadian border has heightened concerns for the Iranian delegation. Taj and his team were forced to turn back from Canada after what they described as disrespectful treatment from immigration officials while attempting to attend the FIFA Congress in Vancouver. Although Taj indicated that their decision to return was voluntary, Canada’s immigration minister later confirmed that Taj's visa had been revoked while he was en route, citing his connections to the IRGC. The IRGC has been designated as a "terrorist entity" by both Canada and the U.S., with Canada making this designation in 2024.
Seeking Assurances from FIFA
In a statement to state broadcaster IRIB, Taj emphasized the need for FIFA to provide guarantees regarding the treatment of the Iranian delegation in the U.S. He stated, “We need a guarantee there, for our trip, that they have no right to insult the symbols of our system — especially the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.” Taj expressed that such assurances are crucial to prevent incidents similar to those experienced in Canada.
While U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that there are no objections to Iranian players participating in the World Cup, he made it clear that individuals with ties to the IRGC would not be permitted entry into the country. Taj, who has a background as a high-ranking official within the IRGC, asserted that without firm guarantees, the Iranian delegation may reconsider their travel plans. He reiterated, “If they accept hosting us, then they must also accept that they must not insult our military institutions in any way.”
