Iran blames U.S. for World Cup participation uncertainty

Iran has pointed fingers at the United States for the uncertainty surrounding its participation in the upcoming World Cup. This accusation underscores the strained relations between the two countries.

In a recent interview, Mehdi Taj, the President of the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran, attributed the uncertainty surrounding Iran's participation in the upcoming World Cup to the United States. According to Tariq Panja of the N.Y. TIMES, Taj expressed that the ongoing situation has created significant challenges for the Iranian national team.

Concerns Over Visa Approvals

Taj highlighted that Iran's preparations for the World Cup have been overshadowed by the backdrop of war and ongoing tensions, leading to concerns about whether the national team will receive the necessary visas in time. He revealed that the decision to train in Mexico rather than the U.S. was made in conjunction with FIFA to reduce the team's time spent in the United States. However, Taj noted that this choice has put his team at a disadvantage.

Dialogue with FIFA

Expressing his frustration, Taj conveyed "deep disappointment" regarding the lack of approval for visa applications for the squad, which is scheduled to play three matches on the American West Coast. He emphasized that the current crisis surrounding Iran's World Cup participation is unprecedented, stating that a host nation should not have the power to disrupt team preparations. Taj also mentioned that Iranian officials have engaged in productive discussions with FIFA leadership, including President Gianni Infantino, to facilitate the team’s participation.

As the situation continues to unfold, Taj remarked, "We are only in contact with FIFA and are not in contact with the United States and don’t know what their thoughts are." He further indicated that the visa complications have led to suspicions that the U.S. might create significant obstacles for the Iranian team.
