Ibrahima Konaté completes switch to Real Madrid from Liverpool - ESPN
Ibrahima Konaté has officially switched from Liverpool to Real Madrid, enhancing the Spanish club's defensive lineup. This transfer highlights Real Madrid's ongoing strategy to strengthen their squad.

Real Madrid has officially announced the acquisition of Ibrahima Konaté, who joins the club on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Liverpool. The 27-year-old defender has signed a deal that will keep him at the Spanish club until 2030.
Summer Signings and Team Restructuring
Konaté becomes the third addition to Real Madrid's squad this summer, following the signings of Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella and Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva. The club is undergoing a significant restructuring after experiencing two consecutive trophyless seasons, which has also seen the return of José Mourinho as head coach after Álvaro Arbeloa's departure.
Prior to his transfer, Madrid had expressed interest in Konaté during the previous year as he entered the final stages of his contract with Liverpool. Despite some initial optimism about a potential move, Konaté indicated in April that he believed there was a "big chance" he would stay at Anfield. However, negotiations that began in 2023 ultimately fell through, leading to Liverpool's confirmation in May that he would leave the club.
Role and Competition at Madrid
With his arrival, Konaté is expected to fill the void left by David Alaba. He will face competition for a starting position in the central defense from Antonio Rüdiger, who recently extended his contract, as well as Dean Huijsen, Raúl Asencio, and Éder Militão.
Konaté began his career at Sochaux before moving to RB Leipzig in 2021 and subsequently signing with Liverpool for £40 million. During his time with the English club, he made 183 appearances and secured several trophies, including the FA Cup, two Carabao Cups, and the Premier League title. Currently, he is part of France's squad at the World Cup, although he was an unused substitute in their opening match against Senegal, which ended in a 3-1 victory.
