Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has expressed his regret to Nigerians following the team's failure to qualify for the upcoming Women's World Cup. This disappointment came after Nigeria's 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the play-off match held on August 9, 2026, during the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

He stated, “All of a sudden, I don’t know, it could be complacency, it could also be, you know, sort of overconfidence, and then we end up making mistakes.”

Additionally, he highlighted the team's inefficiency in front of goal, admitting, “We have not been clinical. We create several chances, but we are very wasteful with the opportunities that always come our way.” Madugu believed that the Super Falcons had ample opportunities to secure a win, stating, “This was a game we would have finished in the first half, based on the opportunities that we had, but we couldn’t utilise them.” He concluded by acknowledging South Africa's clinical finishing, which ultimately led to their victory.
