Hutchinson to lead the Mariners | Latrobe Valley Express
Hutchinson has been appointed as the new coach of the Mariners, bringing fresh strategies and leadership to the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.

John Hutchinson, a club legend, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Central Coast Mariners. The Morwell native returns to the A-League club where he made his mark as a player, ahead of the 2026/27 season, signing a two-year contract.
A Return to Roots
Hutchinson expressed his excitement about returning to the Mariners, stating, “It’s an incredibly special feeling to be back with the Mariners. This club has been such a huge part of my life, I’ve got so many incredible memories here as a player, and to now have the opportunity to make more as head coach is something I’m extremely proud of.” He also highlighted his coaching journey, mentioning the valuable experiences he gained from working with various teams and environments around the world.
Career Highlights
Having joined the Mariners in 2005 after playing for the Northern Spirit and Manly United, Hutchinson was a key figure during the club's inaugural A-League season. Over a decade, he made 271 appearances, becoming the most capped player in Mariners history and captaining the team for three years. His leadership contributed to the Mariners winning their first A-League championship in 2013.
Following his retirement, Hutchinson served as an assistant manager at the Mariners before moving to Seattle Sounders FC 2, where he eventually became head coach in early 2018. His coaching career has included stints at Western United, a development role with the Seattle Sounders in MLS, and leading El Paso Locomotive in the USL for the 2021/22 season. More recently, he coached in Japan, taking charge of Yokohama F. Marinos on an interim basis and later leading Jubilo Iwata.
With the Mariners having experienced a decline in performance after back-to-back A-League championships in 2023 and 2024, Hutchinson is eager to leverage his extensive experience to help the team return to its former glory.
