The South Australian Premier, Peter Malinauskas, has unveiled plans for a significant redevelopment of the Adelaide Circuit, which is set to host the MotoGP. This $96 million project will involve the removal of hundreds of trees, with a focus on environmental initiatives to accompany the upgrade.

Details of the Redevelopment

The Adelaide Circuit will span 4.13 kilometers and feature 15 corners, reviving aspects of the city’s Grand Prix track from the 1980s. The redevelopment is supported by a $15 million environmental package aimed at enhancing the park lands. The Premier emphasized the importance of safety in the project, noting that current MotoGP Safety Advisor Loris Capirossi and five-time Supercars champion Mark Skaife are involved in the design process.

Safety Concerns Following Tragic Incident

This announcement comes in the wake of a tragic incident at The Bend Motorsport Park, where a motorcyclist lost their life following a crash during a motorsport event. South Australian Police confirmed the incident occurred on Sunday morning, prompting an investigation. Premier Malinauskas, who was unaware of the crash at the time of his announcement, reiterated that safety is a top priority, stating that the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) has stringent safety requirements that must be met before approval.

Environmental Considerations

As part of the redevelopment, 377 trees are expected to be removed, with the government indicating that these trees are either unregulated, invasive species, dead, or in poor health. However, Premier Malinauskas noted that 95 percent of the 8,895 trees in the circuit area will remain untouched. The accompanying Adelaide Park Lands Nature Positive Package will focus on restoring butterfly habitats, supporting the grey-headed flying fox, and revitalizing the River Torrens. Conservation Council CEO Kirsty Bevan remarked that the project reflects the impact of community advocacy.
