Barcelona forward Dani Olmo has responded strongly to Roberto Ayala's recent apology regarding an incident that occurred after the FIFA World Cup final. The altercation, which involved Ayala punching Olmo, has sparked controversy, particularly after Ayala characterized his actions as merely a "push" in reaction to comments he claims Olmo made.

Olmo Denies Provocation

In his remarks, Olmo firmly stated that he did not provoke Ayala and criticized the Argentine coach's justification for his actions. "Someone who confesses to being sorry, but justifies a punch by claiming that it was a response to a saying, is probably not sorry, because he is lying, because I didn’t say anything to him, so I don’t need him to apologize," Olmo told Diari de Terrassa. He emphasized the importance of humility and dignity in accepting defeat, suggesting that the Argentine team should have handled their loss with grace.

Setting an Example

Olmo also highlighted the responsibility athletes have as role models for younger generations. "When my children, my family and so many fans and the people of Terrassa watch the game, I want them to be proud of how we compete, how we win, and above all, of our behavior," he stated. He believes that the significance of football extends beyond the game itself, making it crucial for players to exemplify good conduct.

Despite the controversy, Olmo expressed gratitude for the World Cup experience, stating, "Thank God, what is really important is that we have experienced an incredible World Cup, that the world has seen it and that we are world champions after a lot of work." Currently, Olmo is on holiday following Spain's triumph and is set to return to training with Hansi Flick's squad on August 12th.
