Cologne has secured the services of Ghanaian left-back Gideon Mensah on a free transfer, bolstering their squad ahead of the new season.

Contract and Background

Mensah has signed a two-year deal with the Bundesliga club after his previous contract with French side Auxerre came to an end following the 2025/26 season. The 27-year-old defender was a key player for Ghana, starting all five matches during their journey to the Round of 32 in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Thomas Kessler, the managing director of Cologne, expressed his satisfaction with the signing, stating, "We have been looking at Gideon for a longer period of time and are pleased that we could convince him to join Cologne." Cologne, who finished just above the relegation zone in their first season back in the Bundesliga, will kick off their campaign under head coach René Wagner with a DFB Cup first-round match against Würzburger Kickers on August 24, followed by their opening Bundesliga fixture against Hoffenheim on August 29.
