GFA backs Carlos Queiroz after World Cup performance -

The Ghana Football Association has reaffirmed its backing for coach Carlos Queiroz after the team's World Cup performance, emphasizing commitment to future success.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed its support for Carlos Queiroz, recommending him for a long-term position as head coach of the Black Stars following his tenure at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz's Appointment and Future Speculations

The 73-year-old Portuguese coach was initially brought in on a four-month contract to succeed Otto Addo. In recent weeks, there has been speculation regarding Queiroz's future, particularly concerning outstanding payments owed to him by the government after the World Cup. However, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum stated that the Executive Council has evaluated Queiroz's performance and unanimously agreed that he should continue in his role.

Stability and Key Player Returns

Asante Twum emphasized that the decision to retain Queiroz was motivated by the need for stability within the Black Stars' technical team, avoiding another coaching change shortly after the World Cup. The GFA is optimistic that the return of key players, including Mohammed Kudus, Salisu Mohammed, and Alexander Djiku—who missed the World Cup—will enhance the team's performance as they prepare for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Despite the GFA's recommendation, Queiroz's continuation as head coach is not yet assured. Any new contract must receive approval from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, which is responsible for financing the coach's salary. Asante Twum noted that the final decision lies with the ministry, and discussions will need to take place among the GFA, the ministry, and Queiroz to address contractual and financial matters before a long-term agreement can be finalized.
