Freiburg has bolstered its squad for the upcoming Bundesliga season by acquiring goalkeeper Mio Backhaus from Werder Bremen. The 22-year-old, who has represented Germany at the U21 level, enjoyed a standout season in Northern Germany, contributing significantly to Bremen's efforts to remain in the top flight.

Impressive Season at Bremen

During the 2025/26 Bundesliga season, Backhaus recorded five clean sheets in 32 appearances. His performances were pivotal in helping Werder Bremen navigate a challenging campaign, ensuring their survival in the league. Backhaus has also made his mark on the international stage, having played for every German youth team from the U15s to the U21s.

A Bright Future at Freiburg

Backhaus's journey began at Kawasaki Frontale in Japan before he moved to Germany at 14 to join Alemannia Aachen. He later progressed through Bremen's academy, ultimately becoming their first-choice goalkeeper. As he joins Freiburg, which recently made its inaugural appearance in a UEFA Europa League final, questions arise regarding the future of current star keeper Noah Atubolu.
