FIFA World Cup: Italy refuses to replace Iran

Italy has announced that it will not replace Iran in the upcoming FIFA World Cup. This decision comes amid ongoing debates about the tournament's participants.

Italian sports officials have firmly stated that the national team will not take the place of Iran in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, following a suggestion from a U.S. official associated with the Trump administration.

Italy's Stance on World Cup Participation

Despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Iran has not withdrawn from the World Cup and is preparing to compete in the United States. FIFA has confirmed that Iran's group stage matches, scheduled for June near Los Angeles and in Seattle, will proceed as planned. The suggestion for Italy to replace Iran was made by Paolo Zampolli, the U.S. special envoy for global partnerships, during a conversation with President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Official Reactions

Zampolli clarified in a phone interview with the Associated Press that his proposal was not politically motivated, describing it as a contingency plan should Iran be unable to participate. He expressed his desire for the Italian national team to be involved, citing their four World Cup titles as justification. However, Italian officials have strongly opposed the idea. Sports Minister Andrea Abodi stated, “first of all, it’s not possible. Secondly, it’s not a good idea.” Luciano Buonfiglio, president of the Italian Olympic Committee, echoed this sentiment, saying, “You need to deserve to go to the World Cup.” Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti labeled the suggestion as “shameful.”

Italy's absence from the World Cup marks the third consecutive tournament without qualification, leading to the resignations of both the national team coach and the president of the soccer federation. Zampolli, who has connections to the Trump family and has been involved in various political discussions, has previously made headlines for his personal matters as well.

As it stands, Italy remains focused on its future endeavors while Iran prepares for its World Cup matches, with FIFA maintaining that the tournament will continue as scheduled.
